Kulusuk and the Ammassalik area of East Greenland has a fascinating history. Until Danish missionaries and merchants arrived in the area in 1884, people lived as nomad-hunters, isolated and unknown by the rest of the world. The museum is a privately owned and run by Justine Boassen, born and raised in Kulusuk. Most of the items on display once belonged to Justine’s parents, Karina and Jappili Boassen. Her father, Jaappili, was the town-merchant during his working years, and like most East Greenlanders – now and then – was also an active hunter.
Justine’s mother, Karina, made full use of everything that was brought to the house, making sure nothing went to spill or was thrown out. She is a natural collector and these items were filling the storage room of her parent’s house, so Justine’s father eventually passed the items to Justine for preservation. In 2012, Justine and her husband Frederik Wille renovated a small house in their possession to serve as a museum for the collection.

In exhibiting her family’s collection, Justine tells the history of the Tunumiit Iivid of the east coast of Greenland – distinct from the Kalaallit Inuit of the west coast.

The museum’s smaller room boasts a simple but revealing arrangement of the interior of a winter-house. In the main space, also small, visitors can explore hundreds of different items, everything from traditional hunting tools to toys.

Kulusuk Museum provides an insightful, educational, and most importantly honest and personal account of the local history.

Museet er privatejet af Justine Boassen, der er født og opvokset i Kulusuk, og som desuden står for museumsdriften. Det meste af udstillingens indhold tilhørte engang Justines forældre, Karina og Jaappili Boassen. Hendes far Jaappili var i sit arbejdsliv byens købmand, og som de fleste østgrønlændere også en aktiv jæger. Justines mor, Karina, gjorde fuld brug af fangsten som Jaappili bragte hjem - og flere ting - og sikrede, at intet gik til spilde. En samling af jagtrelateret ting voksede gradvist i depotrummet hjemme hos Jaappili and Karina, mens andre emner i familiens besiddelse blev tilført til samlingen.

Jaappili videregav til sidst samlingen til Justine med henblik på videre bevarelse, og i 2012 renoverede Justine og hendes mand, Frederik Wille, et lille hus som skulle tjene som udstillingsrum for samlingen.

Ved fremvisning af families samling, fortæller Justine historien om den grønlandske østkysts Tunumiit Inuit – særskilt fra vestkystens Kalaallit Inuit.

I alle museets udstillingsrum kan besøgende udforske hundredvis af forskellige genstande, alt fra traditionelle jagtredskaber og legetøj. Museets mindste værelse har desuden et enkelt, men afslørende arrangement fra et vinterhus interiør.

Kulusuk Museum giver en indsigtsfuld, oplysende og ikke mindst en ærlig og personlig beretning af den lokale historie.
